This edition of Overlander contains a several page article and pictures covering John Peel who was driving his Moke from Tasmania to Townsville via Perth and the North West. His yellow Moke is mentioned as being about 3 years old in 1977 and although his consumption figures seem a bit low to me he reckons his bill for oil and petrol for the whole trip did not exceed $200. Although the article is about getting to Townsville he does mention Sydney a couple of times suggesting he drove back to Tasmania.
