Overlander - May 1979

A good article where the Factory built 4WD Moke is put through its paces and the while the reveiwers were surprised that it performed better than they expected they weren't exactly glowing in their review on the prototype that was built. The 4WD Moke never went into production while the prototype spent the first 20 years of its life in the roof of Port Darwin Motors with very few kms' on the clock until the owner Des Nudl passed away and his family donated it to the local university who let it rot away in the car park!

Overlander - FebMar 1977

This editions contains a few paragraphs on the Super Moke which surprisingly enough is still around in the hills surrounding Melbourne. The article provides some basic specs of this distinctive fast back Moke with a removale/tilting front end and some go go goodies that get it up to around 145kph and it built for torque and not speed.

Overlander - Oct/Nov 1976

By only the third issue of Overlander they had already given away a Moke as first prize in a 'giant Vecology competition', with the winner being a Ms Tonia Johansen of Figtree Heights answering all five questions correctly and suggesting the new slogan of 'The country is beautiful. Don't run it down" for whatever the Vecology Venture was. As a sign of the times the Moke was promoted as cheap to register, cheap to insure and you can park it in a loading zone and valued at $1600.

Contains a three and bit page story of a guy and his dogs adventure in a Moke towing a trailer across the country side in Queensland and the dramas and people along the way. The trailer gets ditched towards the end of the stry and there are a lot of the familiar little Mokes issue along the way. It is interested to read how little mechanical knowledge some of these people have who were undertaking these large trips in the late 70's.

This edition of Overlander contains a several page article and pictures covering John Peel who was driving his Moke from Tasmania to Townsville via Perth and the North West. His yellow Moke is mentioned as being about 3 years old in 1977 and although his consumption figures seem a bit low to me he reckons his bill for oil and petrol for the whole trip did not exceed $200. Although the article is about getting to Townsville he does mention Sydney a couple of times suggesting he drove back to Tasmania.

The BMC Experience - Issue 8

The BMC Experience Issue 8 January 2014 has a few items of interest to Moke people, the obvious being the journalistic masterpiece written by yours truly reporting on MokeFest 2013 is supported by a 5 page article on the early prototypes and development of the Moke in the UK leading up when production moved to Australia. There are a couple of other images of Mokes in the competition and club news pages
