Stainless Steel Mokes

In the mid 1980's Don Lawson, the owner of a refridgration company started producing stainless steel Moke bodies as his take on solving the issue of rusting Mokes. Called the SSSuperMoke all the panels were unique and with few exceptions familiar to an original Moke formed from his own Jigs. About five or six are know to still exist on the road and in 2009 four or five completed shells and a 20' shipping container were up for sale in Brisbane from the Lawson family. M&R Smash were also involved in dismantling the genuine Mokes and transfering the parts on to the stainless steel shells

SS Moke - The tourist

This Moke appears to have travelled between Townsville and Victoria as I have photos of it in a workshop in Townsville with the Vctorian rego plates and then these pictures taken in an auto transport yard in Victoria in 2008 a few years later. A search on the plates rego show that it is no longer wearing that registration and as yet I haven't seen it pop up agan anytime recently. Around the same time there was one heard of in Coburg, Victoria that could quite possibly be this one.

SS Moke - In Japan

This stainless steel Moke came up for sale on a car site in Japan a few years ago, back as far as 2010 from what I can get from the details of the photo. Nothing more is known about it.

SS Moke - The Yellow seats

This SSSuperMoke gets around. Seen here for sale in Queensland around 2017 it is believed to have been for sale in NSW and more recently turned up in Victoria around 2019/2020. The yellow seats make it one of the more obvious Mokes to spot when it comes up for sale first coming to my attention back in 2012.

SS Moke - Nice Roof

This Moke in NSW came up for sale on an online car sales website in July 2021 and it looks like a well keep example of a stainless steel Moke. In particular I like the way the hood has been trimmed down and styled. I didn't follow the sale to see how it went but it did have an asking price of $30K.

SS Moke - 1989 Shopping Centre carpark

A vintage photo of a stainless steel Moke taken in a shopping centre car park in 1989. No more details available.

SS Moke - UK Built Stainless Moke

In July 2014 the Moke was trying to pass itself off as an Austin 1980 built Moke but obviously it s made of Stainless steel, is not an Australian built SS SuperMoke, but some home made effort which is surprisingly quite good. The advert was asking for 40,000 pound but clearly, as written, in the advert on eBay it says, "THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN THE FAMILY FOR MANY YEARS SO I THOUGHT I WOULD PUT A TAG ON TO SEE WHAT INTEREST I GET IN THIS." No idea whether it was sold or if there was any real interest.
