The 2005 Dakar Moke
In the 2005 Paris to Dakar rally you occasionally caught a glimpse of a Moke rushing through the dunes, yes a Moke.

The Paris to Dakar car rally is considered probably the toughest off-road race in the world and the dream of many off-road enthusiast is to drive and at least complete the 16 day event. Less than half the field make it to the end, some people sadly die each year, the supoort crews have their own race in Trucks and it goes on a for a couple of and it rarely actually leaves from Paris or finishes in Dakar these days.

Now if you were out there in the Sahara and had fallen off your camel and been without water for a few days you might be thinking that Moke rushing past was a mirage, however if your Camel dismounted you in 2005 then it probably was a Moke!!1.

After being part of a team in the 2004 Paris to Dakar , Christian Laporte, decide he was going to enter his own vehicle in the event in 2005 and being from the small island of St-Barthelemy, he wanted to do something to reflect the unique lifestyle of the place. He started work on his project, a Toyota short wheel base landcruiser with some body work to make it look like a the many Mokes that run around on St-Barthelemy.

A local newspaper did a Story on Christian and his unique entry just before they departed for the event. You can read their coverage here. (228kb pdf)

You can see in the photos below the amount of effort that went into making the Dakar 'Moke' and the rather lapse work safety in sandals and no mask welding, but the finished results are a recognisable Moke like Landcruiser
